Over the past two decades NiteStar has shared life-saving health and disease prevention information with over two million young people and the providers who work with them.
As the HIV/AIDS epidemic among adolescents continues to escalate, government funding for HIV/AIDS prevention programs is declining. Even as the requests for our services grow, we find ourselves unable to meet the demand because of funding shortages.
It is crucial that young people continue to receive accurate information through the kind of long-term, behavior-change programs that NiteStar provides. Through the unique use of theater, which fully engages today's media-savvy youth, these performances and follow-up workshops foster healthy attitudes, develop risk reduction skills and provide links to critical resources.
It is important that this work continue to be part of the school curriculum, because the classroom is the best place to monitor and evaluate the impact so that we are able to continue fine-tuning our presentations and ensure that young people are given what they need.
While our focus is primarily on the prevention of HIV/AIDS, we also address subjects such as other STDs, pregnancy prevention, substance abuse, relationship and domestic violence, and the many social and sexual issues faced by young people growing up in difficult times.
We owe our youth every opportunity to live lives in which they can realize their full potential without the tragedies that result from lack of appropriate information and inadequate skills. They, and we, need your help to make this possible.
